The Back Half of Storm Season Requires Fresh Preparation
The Atlantic hurricane season peaks statistically around September 10, and the period from mid-August through mid-October produces the majority of major hurricane landfalls in the historical record. If you made storm preparations in the spring — securing outdoor items, checking the roof, testing the generator — those preparations are now two to three months old. Some of them are still adequate. Some are not.
The mid-season reassessment is not a repeat of the spring checklist but a targeted review of what changes during a summer of use, weather exposure, and the specific wear that July heat and storms impose. It also addresses the specific additional preparations appropriate for the peak of hurricane season — which is different in character and in the relevant geography from the spring severe weather season.
This is also the moment to revisit emergency supplies, communication plans, and insurance documentation before any specific storm is in the forecast — because the time to check these things is never the 48 hours before a storm makes landfall.
What Summer May Have Changed Since Spring
Several categories of spring preparation degrade over the summer and need reassessment before peak season.
Roof and exterior. The first half of storm season — the hail events, severe thunderstorms, and strong winds of June and July — may have caused damage that wasn’t apparent or wasn’t addressed after individual events. Walk the perimeter of the home and look at the roof, gutters, and siding with fresh eyes. The hail myths piece described how hail damage to shingles may not be visible without a professional inspection — if a significant hail event occurred in your area since spring, a roofing inspection now, before peak hurricane season, is worth scheduling. Damage that went unaddressed in July becomes the infiltration point that allows a Category 1 hurricane’s rain to enter the house in September.
Generator. If you tested the generator before summer and haven’t run it since, run it again now. Generators that sit for extended periods develop fuel system issues — stale fuel in the carburetor, degraded fuel stabilizer — that can prevent startup exactly when they’re needed. Run the generator under load for 30 minutes, check the oil, and ensure you have an adequate fuel supply with properly stabilized fuel. If the generator showed any issues in spring that weren’t addressed, address them before peak season rather than during it.

Mid-season is the right time to test again — sump pump motors can fail over summer from thermal stress, from running frequently during summer storms, or from sitting without use if the season has been dry. A two-minute bucket test costs nothing and confirms the pump will work when the next heavy rain event arrives.
Tree assessment. Trees that appeared sound in spring may have developed or revealed new concerns over summer: a major thunderstorm that partially broke a limb, drought stress that has weakened root systems, or rapid summer growth that has extended canopy over the house in ways it hadn’t before. Re-examine trees within striking distance of the house, power lines, and vehicles with the same critical eye that the pre-season assessment recommended.
Outdoor furniture and items. Summer use disperses outdoor items — chairs moved to different locations, planters added, new decorative items acquired — that weren’t in their pre-season positions during the spring assessment. Before peak season, identify every item in the outdoor space that would need to be secured or stored before a storm and confirm there’s a place for each of them.
The Hurricane-Specific Additions
The severe weather preparations of spring — focused on tornados, hail, and straight-line winds — overlap significantly with hurricane preparation but don’t cover everything. Peak hurricane season is the time to add the preparations specific to tropical systems.
Know your flood zone and evacuation zone. If you live within several hundred miles of the Gulf or Atlantic coast, identify your FEMA flood zone designation and your local emergency management evacuation zone before any storm is named. This information — available through local emergency management websites and through FEMA’s flood map service — tells you whether you would be required to evacuate for a major hurricane and where your designated evacuation routes lead. This is the kind of information that takes 15 minutes to research on a calm Tuesday and that is nearly impossible to find efficiently in the 24 hours before a hurricane warning is issued.
Assemble or refresh your hurricane kit. The standard hurricane emergency kit — three to seven days of water (one gallon per person per day), non-perishable food, flashlights with extra batteries, a first aid kit, important documents in waterproof storage, cash, medications, and phone charging capability — should be assembled and ready before any storm is forecast. If you assembled a kit in spring, check expiration dates on food and medications, confirm water storage is still adequate, and replace any items that were used during the season.
Document your property. The storm damage insurance piece (6/18) covered the importance of documentation after a storm. Mid-season is the right time to update property documentation before peak season — photograph or video the current condition of the home’s exterior, roof, and contents, and ensure this documentation is stored somewhere accessible regardless of what happens to the physical home (cloud storage, email to yourself). This baseline documentation, created before any storm, is the most powerful evidence in an insurance claim for storm damage.
Review your insurance coverage. Confirm that your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance includes wind and water damage coverage appropriate for your location, that your dwelling coverage limit is sufficient to rebuild at current construction costs, and that you understand your deductible structure. For coastal residents, confirm whether you have separate flood insurance — standard homeowner’s policies do not cover flood damage — and whether your coverage limits are adequate given current home values. This review, like evacuation zone identification, is something that takes 30 minutes in July and is genuinely difficult to accomplish in the 48 hours before a hurricane warning.
Communications and Emergency Planning
Emergency communications plans that felt adequate in spring may have gaps that peak storm season reveals. A few specific areas to reassess.
Out-of-state contact. Local communication infrastructure — cell networks, internet service — can be disrupted by major storms for days. Designating an out-of-state contact who can serve as a coordination point for family members who may be separated during or after a storm provides a communication hub that doesn’t depend on local infrastructure. Everyone in the household should know the out-of-state contact’s phone number without requiring a phone to look it up.
Pet emergency plan. The Fourth of July pet pieces covered general pet emergency planning. Peak hurricane season is the time to confirm the specific details: where the nearest pet-friendly emergency shelter is, which hotels along your evacuation route accept pets, and what your plan is for large animals or livestock if you live in rural coastal areas. These arrangements are nearly impossible to make efficiently with a hurricane 36 hours from landfall.
NOAA Weather Radio. As covered in the storm home prep piece, NOAA Weather Radio is the most reliable severe weather alert system during power outages when cellular and internet infrastructure may be degraded. If you don’t have a battery-powered NOAA Weather Radio, mid-season is the right time to acquire one. Units with battery backup and the Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) feature — which allows the radio to alarm only for warnings in your specific county — are available for under $30 and provide warning capability that is genuinely independent of power and cellular infrastructure.
The August Window
The three-week period from late July through mid-August — before the statistical peak of the hurricane season but after the preparedness mindset of the spring has faded — is the ideal window for mid-season preparation. Contractors who were busy with post-spring-storm work are available again. Hurricane supply retailers are stocked before the peak-season buying surge that follows the first threatening storm. Insurance agents are accessible without the frantic demand that surrounds a named storm.
The preparation that happens in this window — the generator test, the roof inspection, the kit refresh, the insurance review, the evacuation plan confirmation — is preparation made on your schedule, with adequate time and without the pressure of an approaching storm compressing every decision. That is the preparation that is actually useful when it matters.
