Peak Summer Sun Exposure Deserves Better Information

By the end of July, most people have spent weeks accumulating sun exposure—at the pool, on walks, during yard work, at outdoor gatherings. Along the way, a handful of persistent myths about sun and UV exposure tend to guide people’s decisions, and several of them are quietly responsible for a lot of unnecessary sunburn. With peak sun intensity still weeks away from fully receding, it’s a good time to separate what’s actually true from what just sounds true.

Myth: Clouds Block UV Radiation

This is one of the most common and most consequential sun myths in circulation. Clouds block visible light—which is why an overcast day feels dimmer and cooler—but they don’t reliably block ultraviolet radiation. Depending on cloud thickness and type, a significant percentage of UV radiation passes straight through cloud cover, and in some cases, thin or scattered clouds can actually increase UV exposure at the surface by reflecting additional UV rays down from multiple angles.

This is precisely why people report getting sunburned on days that felt cool and hazy: they judged sun risk by how hot or bright it felt rather than by the UV index, which measures the thing that actually causes sunburn. Checking the UV index rather than relying on how sunny it looks is the more reliable approach, especially on partly cloudy days.

Myth: You Can’t Get Sunburned in Water

Water doesn’t protect you from UV radiation—it can make exposure worse. Water reflects a meaningful portion of incoming UV radiation back upward, meaning that swimming or floating exposes you to both the direct UV coming from the sky and the reflected UV bouncing off the water’s surface. This reflective effect is part of why sunburns from a day at the pool, lake, or beach are often more severe than sunburns from equivalent time spent on dry land.

Additionally, water provides a cooling sensation that can mask how much cumulative sun exposure is actually occurring, since the discomfort that normally signals overexposure on land is muted by the water’s temperature.

Myth: A Base Tan Protects You From Further Sun Damage

A tan is not protection—it’s evidence that skin cell DNA has already been damaged by UV exposure. The slight increase in melanin production that produces a tan offers only a very modest amount of additional UV protection, roughly equivalent to a low-SPF sunscreen at best, and nowhere near enough to prevent further burning or the cumulative skin damage that drives long-term skin cancer risk.

The idea of deliberately tanning early in the season to “build protection” for the rest of summer doesn’t hold up: it simply front-loads UV damage rather than preventing it, and the modest protective effect doesn’t come close to offsetting the harm done to acquire it.

Myth: Higher SPF Means You Can Reapply Less Often

SPF measures the level of protection against UVB radiation when sunscreen is properly and freshly applied—it does not measure how long that protection lasts once applied. Sunscreen degrades with time regardless of SPF number, breaking down under continued UV exposure and washing or rubbing off with sweat, water, and contact with towels or clothing.

SPF 100 does not last meaningfully longer than SPF 30 once applied; both require reapplication roughly every two hours during continuous sun exposure, and immediately after swimming or heavy sweating, regardless of the number printed on the bottle.

Myth: Darker Skin Doesn’t Need Sunscreen

Melanin does provide some natural UV protection, and people with darker skin do have a somewhat reduced sunburn risk compared to those with lighter skin under identical exposure. But “reduced risk” is not “no risk.” People with darker skin tones absolutely can and do get sunburned, and they remain vulnerable to the deeper, longer-term effects of UV exposure, including skin cancer, which is often diagnosed at more advanced stages in people with darker skin precisely because of the assumption that sun protection isn’t necessary.

Myth: You Only Need Sunscreen When You’re Deliberately “In the Sun”

Incidental exposure adds up. Walking to your car, sitting near a window, doing yard work in intermittent shade, or spending time outdoors on an overcast day all contribute UV exposure, even when none of it feels like “being out in the sun” the way a day at the beach does. Cumulative low-level exposure across an entire summer contributes meaningfully to overall UV damage, which is why dermatologists generally recommend daily sunscreen use during high-UV months rather than only on days that are explicitly sun-focused.

What Actually Protects You

The UV index, not the temperature or the appearance of the sky, is the most reliable guide to sun risk on any given day. Sunscreen needs reapplication on a schedule, not a number. Water and clouds both change your exposure in ways that feel counterintuitive—water increasing it, clouds barely reducing it. And no skin tone, and no amount of prior tanning, provides protection worth relying on in place of sunscreen, shade, and sun-protective clothing during the sun’s most intense hours.
